The horsehair has been flying here in Pennsylvania for a few weeks now.
Here are some of the tools I like to keep in my shedding arsenal.
My personal favorite little gem is Farnam's slick and easy grooming block. This thing is a lifesaver. It pulls the hair out of the horse, leaving behind a clean shiny summer hair coat.
I use a shedding blade, not on the horse, but on the bottom side of my saddle pad to take off those clumps of winter hair.
A fine curry should be used on those sensitive areas like the legs and face. Even though a fine curry is gentle you must still use caution on those sensitive areas.
I prefer a grooma curry to get out the hair and give the horse a nice comfortable massage. The prongs are long on this; therefore you can groom longer and get out more hair before you have to clean the hair out of it.
The most important thing is good old-fashioned elbow grease. I plan to spend about an hour per grooming session this time of year. A big help to get rid of that winter hair is to also curry your horse after his workout. The warmer the horse, the more he sheds.
