Spring Shots

This year we were a bit late in getting the horses their spring shots. Fredi has been doing double duty the past few months and couldn't take out the time any sooner to get it done. Everything went pretty smooth. As usual, I like to sit with Dr. Hachten and ask a few questions. He's been our vet since I was a little girl, and he is such a wealth of knowledge.

I told him Perry is on a regular deworming program, but she is still rubbing her tail. Doc says that those are external parasites, nothing a little head & shoulders anti-dandruff shampoo won't fix. What a great tip! I thought I would pass that along.

After Doc left, Fredi rode Orion who is an eight year old green broke horse that we somewhat recently acquired. The horse has been sitting for awhile, and it's time to get some training on him. O started out by trying to rear, and calling to the other horses. By the time Fredi was finished the horse was calm, quiet, and they were working on some nice looking spins. At first he wouldn't even lift a shoulder, by the time they were finished, he was moving and lifting his forehand quite nicely.

Orion is the horse in the picture, and Fredi wanted him to "smile" for the camera. Fredi was playing, but the play has a purpose. He likes to play with the horses mouths to get them more used to being handled around their mouths.

After O was cooled down Fredi hosed him and stood him tied for about an hour. He decided to get Perry hosed and tied for awhile too. Perry started to shake pretty bad. I thought maybe she was cold. It wasn't that warm in the barn, but it should have been warm enough. He threw a cooler on her and she still continued to shake. Her hair was warm to the touch, so we decided it must have been a reaction to the shots. I called Doc and he told me to giver her 10cc's of Banamine, and within 20 minutes she should be fine. I had the Banamine on hand and Fredi administered it to her, and just like Doc said 20 minutes later she was back to normal.

It turned out to be a really good day but I'm pretty tired from all the excitement. I'm trying to get a bit active to get my labor started. No such luck! Today I watched Fredi for hours while he was riding, teaching and training. I haven't had that much stimulation in awhile and it was fun!

Looks like it was a gorgeous day!

I have my spring shots in my refrigerator and haven't given them either. I don't know how! But, I have a friend coming over next week that will give the shots and put her flexible, athletic teenager on my horse to do what Fredi did with Orion. LOL My friend doesn't want me on my horse until all the above happens. Beware of the splat, she says.

Deanna, the baby will get here. It's just a matter of when. I'll send labor thoughts your way in the meantime...

Hi Theresa,

It was a gorgeous day. Not too hot, not too cold. Not too many bugs yet...

Beware of the splat, that's funny! As long as there is a soft spot to land you'll be fine right?

We have shredded rubber in the indoor, and sand in the outdoor arena. If I think I may come off of a horse I prefer the spot where I can bounce to the splat of the sand.

It's nice you have a friend who can do the shots for you and has a flexible teen to ride too lol.

Thanks for the labor thoughts, I am trying so hard to be patient but I'm chomping at the bit...

Sounds like you had a full day but that baby will arrive when it's time and I doubt your need to have it be sooner will affect it much.

That is what I'm starting to realize, and I am trying to get my mind set changed from "hurry up" to "wait". No one is pregnant forever, even if I feel like it lol.

I was in that "hurry up" stage for a LONG while when I was pregnant with Kevin. I was so miserable and of course past due. Add to that the continuous "all day" sickness, legs going numb, etc and Christmas just a few weeks away. Anyway...one evening I decided I wasn't going to think about it anymore and just go along for the ride and wouldn't ya know it...the next morning my water broke and Kev was born that evening...LOL! Funny how things like that work! :) ((HUGS!!)) and hopefully it won't be much longer! Just relax and enjoy the ride...ya never know what might happen! ;)

How are you today, Deanna?

I don't think it's ever easy waiting for a baby to come - horse OR human! But, they do. You will know when it's time!

Hi Equine Spirit & Theresa!

Yeah, I've given up trying to will it to happen and I'm trying to just relax and let nature take it's course. Fredi & I are being relaxed with it, but the rest of the family is getting excited.

The phone keeps ringing, "Anything yet? What are you waiting for?"

Those numb legs and all day sickness are a real pain, but I just keep thinking I can't be pregnant forever right?

I'm now using the pregnancy to play tricks on people to amuse myself. They say, "When are you due?" and I say "Huh? I'm not pregnant." Then then they apologize and want to crawl in a hole. At that moment I confess and we all have a good laugh. I told the tellers at the bank I wasn't pregnant and I had a cyst that was why my belly was so big... Everyone's mouth dropped and it was hilarious! I told them the truth and it still took them a few minutes to recover, then we all couldn't stop laughing.

What comes around goes around so I hope I don't have to pay for this bad behavior ;)
